My lab is interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms regulating the development of the hematopoietic system during embryogenesis. In particular we would like to understand how hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are generated. Our approach has been to study a cell known as the hemangioblast, which has both hematopoietic and vascular potential. We have access to mouse hemangioblasts and mesoderm populations prior to hematopoietic commitment from different mouse embryo stages. We will study these cell populations using cell biological and genomic approaches (eg. microarray) to elucidate key factors regulating HSC fate. We aim to apply our findings to protocols to efficiently and robustly differentiate HSCs from mouse and human ES cells.
